He studied a range of engineering subjects at Cambridge University and acquired a first-class honours degree in 1962, before moving to Birmingham University to complete his PhD in mechanical engineering in 1966.

His professional career as a practising chartered engineer continues up to the present, and has spanned three leading aerospace companies, including one in Germany.

His study of the German language began at school, continued throughout his time at university, and subsequently throughout his career.

He began translating regularly for his present company in 1975 and continues to do so. In 1989, with the company's permission, he began to offer a translation service to other customers also.

In 1989 he obtained full Membership of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, and in early 1992 became the Regional Co-ordinator for the East Midlands Regional Group.
